ALL launches must carried out WITH Adult Supervision.
The Launch Pad System
One of the often-ignored tools of this hobby is the Launch Pad system. This system is not just about the launch pad itself, it is the Electronic Launch Controller unit that is used in unison with the launch pad that makes this a safer hobby.
Note: While you enjoy this hobby, never forget that rocket engines are dangerous and must not be mishandled.
The Launch Pad
The Launch Pad is a tri-foot stand with a (steel) blast deflector plate and a guide rod can be angled so you can launch your rocket into the wind. The reason why you launch into the wind is to reduce the recovery time of your rocket - the wind will carry your rocket further if you do not angle the launch rod. Remember, the faster you recover your rocket, the faster you can re-launch your rocket.
The (Electronic) Launch Controller
The Launch Controller is the second vital tool needed for a successful launch. Launch controller comes complete with safety key and 15 ft. of cable. (4 "AA" batteries are required for use.) With this unit, the rocketeer can stand at a safe distance when launching the rocket. Be sure to make a pre-check of the electrical system prior to launch - again this helps with mis-fires.
Procedures for an Engine mis-fire:
- Remove the safety key from the controller
- Wait a minute
- Have an Adult ( and ONLY the Adult) approach the rocket with care wearing a pair of leather gloves and dismantle the electronic system from the rocket
- Remove the rocket from the launch stand and inspect the engine carefully, making sure there is no fire nor glow of ash inside the engine, and if possible, re-insert another igniter and return to launch procedures
If the engine fails to fire after several tries, please discard the engine by soaking the engine in water for 24 hours, then throw it away.
